Lake Bourget Summer Activities: A Local's Full Guide

A Morning on the Largest Lake in France

Lake Bourget wakes up slowly in summer. By seven the water is still glass, the Dent du Chat ridge is mirrored across the surface, and the only sound is the first paddleboarder pushing off from the Grand Port in Aix-les-Bains. This is the best hour to understand the place: before the beaches fill, when the Alps catch the early light and the lake looks less like a resort and more like something ancient.

Lake Bourget is France's largest natural lake, eighteen kilometres long, hemmed by vineyards to the east and sheer limestone to the west. The Savoy locals treat it as an extension of the garden. The range of Lake Bourget summer activities on offer means you rarely do the same thing twice, and most of it is reachable without a car if you base yourself well.

Where to Swim

For a proper swim with shade and a lawn, the plage municipale at Le Bourget-du-Lac is the easy choice: gently shelving, lifeguarded in July and August, with a snack kiosk and a view straight across to Hautecombe. Families settle in for the day here.

If you prefer water you half-discover, head to Aix-les-Bains and the small coves below the Petit Port, or drive the west shore toward Conjux and Chatillon where the banks are quieter and the water deepens fast. The lake warms to a genuinely comfortable 24 to 26 degrees by late July, warmer than you expect from something this alpine. Bring sandals; parts of the shoreline are pebbled rather than sand.

The Lakeside Greenway by Bike

The ViaRhona and the local Tour du Lac cycle routes give you a mostly flat, traffic-free greenway hugging the eastern shore. From Le Bourget-du-Lac you can ride north toward Aix-les-Bains in under forty minutes at an easy pace, passing reed beds, marinas and the occasional heron standing motionless in the shallows.

Rent wheels at the Grand Port or come with your own. The ambitious can loop the entire lake, roughly fifty kilometres, but the western section involves road sharing and a few climbs, so most people turn it into a half-day out-and-back and reward themselves with an ice cream at the Esplanade du Lac. Early morning or the cooler hours after five are the kindest times to ride in high summer.

Hautecombe Abbey by Boat

The single most atmospheric outing is crossing the lake to the Abbaye d'Hautecombe. The Cistercian abbey rises straight from the water on the western shore, a place of Savoyard counts and quiet cloisters, and arriving by boat is how it was always meant to be seen.

Bateaux du Lac du Bourget run scheduled crossings from Aix-les-Bains and the Grand Port through the season. Check the timetable the day before, as departures thin out and the popular afternoon boats fill. The abbey church is open to visitors between services; dress modestly and keep your voice low. Give yourself the full round trip, around two to three hours, and sit on the open deck for the approach.

Climbing the Dent du Chat

When you want to earn your view, the Dent du Chat is the classic. The jagged summit on the western ridge rises to 1,390 metres, and from the top the whole lake unrolls beneath you with the Mont Blanc massif on the horizon on clear days.

Start from the Col du Chat. The trail climbs steadily through forest before a steeper, rockier final push with cables in places; it is not technical but it demands sure footing and proper shoes. Allow around four hours return and carry water, as there is none on the route. Go early to beat both the heat and the afternoon cloud that often gathers over the ridge. Less committed walkers can enjoy the gentler marsh trails of the Domaine de Buttet near the lake instead.

Your Base at L'Oree du Lac

All of this is easier when home is at the water's edge. L'Oree du Lac is a 106 square metre penthouse in Le Bourget-du-Lac facing the largest lake in France, with a private hot tub for soaking tired legs after the Dent du Chat and a terrace made for watching the ridge turn pink at dusk. The beach, the greenway and the boat departures are all within reach without reaching for the car keys.

It sleeps a family or two couples in comfort, and the space is built for slow summer evenings after full days outside. From EUR 260 per night, bookable direct. Come for the swimming and the sailing, stay for the morning when the lake is glass and entirely yours.
